just because i've consumed these media doesn't mean i condone their contents, or what their author is or does. and because i'm not a psychic, i also can't know what's gonna happen with or will be revealed about them.
i first wanted to add review ratings to lists like this one, but i eventually decided not to. some of these media i genuinely loved, but can't "feature" in good conscience because of what i then learned about their authors; and removing them from this list would i feel be intellectually dishonest to both you and myself.
rather, i encourage you to consume media responsibly; that is,
- research the author. do their works echo some of their personal ideas? have they expressed themself about current events? have allegations been made against them? googling "(author name) controversies" is generally a quick way to dig up potential dirt.
- research the media. what ideas does it convey? in what conditions was it produced? who will your money go to if you decide to buy it? know what you're in for and see if there are ways to acquire the media you feel better about than others.
in the worst case scenario, you'll have dodged a bullet and can spread the word. in the best case scenario, you might've learned a bunch of interesting facts and found related works from your research! media literacy will never make you lose anything; only gain knowledge.
